On January 6, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as head of the Liberal Party, citing rising political upheaval. This decision follows several problems, including deteriorating popularity ratings and strong internal disagreement within his party. 

Trudeau declared that he would stay Prime Minister until a new leader was chosen via a competitive process. Trudeau's statement comes on the heels of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland's departure, which was caused by differences over trade policy with the incoming Trump administration. 

Freeland's resignation dealt a severe blow to Trudeau's leadership since she was one of his most trusted friends. The political environment has transformed radically for Trudeau and the Liberal Party, with surveys showing that its popularity has fallen to its lowest point in years. 

An Abacus Data survey issued in December found that Trudeau's approval rating had plummeted to 19%. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party, headed by Pierre Poilievre, has stormed ahead in the polls, leading by more than 20%.

Trudeau's resignation comes as the Liberal Party confronts rising internal pressure. Following Freeland's departure, several party members openly encouraged him to resign. The leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Jagmeet Singh, has declared intentions to submit a no-confidence resolution against Trudeau's cabinet, complicating the political situation. During his resignation announcement, 

Trudeau expressed his sincere concern for Canadians and pledged to serve the nation until a new leader is elected. He remarked, "I am a warrior. Every bone in my body has prompted me to fight because I care about Canadians." However, the reality of his diminishing popularity and internal party turmoil has made it more impossible for him to hold his post.

The forthcoming general election, scheduled for October 20, 2025, adds urgency to the problem. With Trudeau stepping down as party leader but staying prime minister until March 24, the Liberal Party will be left without a clear leader at this important time. The prorogation of Parliament until March will also postpone legislative actions and debates on critical problems confronting Canada.

Trudeau's stint as Prime Minister started in 2015 and has been distinguished by substantial successes and scandals. His administration was chastised for climate change policies, Indigenous rights, and economic management. Despite these hurdles, Trudeau won re-election in both 2019 and 2021. However, subsequent events have eclipsed his achievements. 

The economic picture in Canada has gotten more difficult, with growing inflation rates and worries about consumer debt levels. The impending danger of tariffs from the United States, especially under Trump's administration, has raised concerns about Canada's economic outlook. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara submitted an N1.188 trillion budget for 2025 to a three-member section of the state parliament, sparking objections from supporters of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This difficult budget presentation has revived political tensions in the state, with Fubara continuing to ignore the bigger assembly loyal to Wike.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has been in political turmoil since October 2023, when 27 Wike supporters defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This defection was accompanied by a deterioration in ties between Fubara and Wike, who were formerly comrades. 

The legislature became factionalized, with Fubara refusing to acknowledge the authority of pro-Wike legislators headed by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.In December 2023, Fubara survived an impeachment attempt coordinated by these politicians, exacerbating the split. Rivers State's political environment has since been marked by allegations of criminality and power conflicts.

On December 30, 2024, Fubara submitted the budget plan to a factional parliament headed by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo. This assembly has three members: Oko-Jumbo, Deputy Speaker Adolphus Orubienimigha, and House Leader Sokari Goodboy Sokari. The "Budget of Inclusive Growth and Development" intends to stimulate economic development and raise living conditions in Rivers State.

Fubara said that this budget will be supported by various sources, including the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and other statutory allocations.

The presentation provoked instant protests from Wike supporters, who called Fubara's actions unlawful. The opposition APC condemned the budget presentation as unlawful, claiming that Fubara's failure to interact with the legitimate parliament threatens democratic ideals in Rivers State.

Wike has been open about his discontent with Fubara's government. As the current Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, he continues to wield power in Rivers politics and has promised to legally oppose Fubara's choices.

Fubara's budget plan focuses on key sectors such as infrastructure development, healthcare, and education. He announced large expenditures in road building as well as social development projects aimed at empowering youth and creating jobs.

Fubara claimed that Rivers State's domestically produced income has grown significantly, with a projected rise of more than N300 billion in 2024 compared to prior years. This cash increase is critical for financing the ambitious initiatives proposed in the 2019 budget.

Rivers State's continuing political upheaval creates hurdles to efficient government. With court fights looming over the validity of both the assembly and Fubara's proposed budget, parties are anxious about possible interruptions to government operations.

While Governor Fubara's budget intends to promote growth and development in Rivers State, it is overshadowed by major political struggle and resistance from Wike's camp, creating concerns about its execution and efficacy in light of current legislative power issues.

Heavy fog has caused substantial difficulties at UK airports, especially during the busy Christmas season. As of December 28, 2024, visibility has decreased to as low as 100 meters in sections of South East and Central England, resulting in a slew of aircraft cancellations and delays at major airports like Gatwick, Heathrow, and Manchester.

Gatwick Airport had significant disruption, with almost 40 planes delayed on Saturday morning alone. On Friday night, travelers faced up to three-hour delays, with some aircraft arriving as late as nine hours. EasyJet and Turkish Airlines were among the most severely impacted, with several flights incurring substantial delays or diversions.

A Gatwick representative confirmed that temporary air traffic restrictions had been introduced owing to the fog, and they regretted any disruption caused to passengers.

Heathrow Airport, another key hub, had similar problems. As of Saturday morning, the airport had canceled 20 planes and delayed 29 more. Passengers were encouraged to check their flight statuses on a frequent basis owing to continued weather-related concerns.

The fog caused delays at Manchester Airport, affecting 16 flights and 27 arrivals. National Air Traffic Services (NATS) reported that temporary air traffic restrictions were in effect at many UK airports owing to poor visibility.

The weather has hampered air travel and train services across the UK. Major rail stations in London, including Liverpool Street and Paddington, were closed due to engineering work and fog-related delays. The National Rail service cautioned customers that trains might be canceled or delayed for up to 40 minutes.

The Met Office has warned about continuous fog anticipated to last over the weekend, especially in the South East and central England. Meteorologists predict that although visibility may improve somewhat on Sunday, thick fog may continue to hamper visibility severely in certain regions.

Travelers are asked to be attentive and check with their airlines for the most recent flight information. NATS highlighted that air traffic restrictions are being introduced strictly for safety reasons and that they are working closely with airlines and airports to reduce inconvenience.

Despite emergency personnel's best attempts, the victims, aged 38 and 24, were declared dead at the spot. A teenage kid and a guy in his late twenties were rushed to the hospital with significant injuries, although they are said to be in stable condition.

A 49-year-old Milton Keynes man has been detained in connection with the stabbings on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He remains in police detention as detectives put together the circumstances leading up to the incident. 

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Brangwin, overseeing the investigation for Thames Valley Police's Major Crime Unit, offered condolences to the victims' families and informed the public that there was no continuing danger since all people involved knew one other.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, especially considering it occurred on Christmas Day—a day traditionally linked with family reunions and joy. Police have enhanced their presence in the area to give comfort and help to those who may be feeling upset by the violence. DCI Brangwin highlighted that anybody with information or video relating to the event should come forward to help with the inquiry.

The names of the dead ladies have not yet been publicly published, as police are attempting to inform next of kin and offer them help during this sad time. The effect of such a brutal act on families during what is intended to be a pleasant Christmas season is tremendous, causing an outpouring of sadness and compassion from community members and local authorities alike.

Thames Valley Police have begun a double murder investigation after this occurrence. They are requesting witnesses or anybody with pertinent information to contact them. The police have informed the public that they are taking the situation seriously and are dedicated to discovering the truth behind this unfortunate tragedy.

A sad hit-and-run event happened on December 14, 2024, in Smethwick, Birmingham, killing a two-year-old kid and wounding four people. The crash included a stolen gray Porsche Cayenne and a Toyota car.

The collision occurred soon before 11 p.m. on Dartmouth Road. Witnesses said the Porsche, which had been reported stolen earlier that month, crashed with the Toyota before the driver left the scene. Emergency personnel responded quickly, sending the infant and four people to surrounding hospitals. Unfortunately, the two-year-old youngster died from his injuries soon after arriving.

A 29-year-old lady and a 30-year-old male were among those wounded, and both are in severe condition. Two additional people, both aged 30, are said to be stable. The seriousness of the situation has taken the community by surprise, with many offering their sympathies to the mourning family.

West Midlands Police have opened an inquiry into the incident. Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) has encouraged the Porsche driver to come forward and accept responsibility for their conduct. 

He went on to say that they made a poor choice by fleeing the scene, and I urge them to now make the right choice. Police have also asked anybody who observed the incident or has CCTV or dashcam evidence to contact them as they conduct their investigation.

The occurrence has elicited grief and resentment from the local community. Many neighbors have used social media to express their sadness and fury over the irresponsible conduct that resulted in such a horrible conclusion. Community leaders are advocating for more road safety awareness and tighter enforcement of hit-and-run events.

Nigeria has made a historic payment of ₦85 billion (about $54.3 million) to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking the first complete settlement of their community fee in 19 years. 

This payment, made by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray during the 66th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja, demonstrates Nigeria's renewed commitment to regional cooperation and development.

The ECOWAS community levy is a 0.5% tax on imported commodities from non-ECOWAS nations, paid by member governments on behalf of the organization. These monies are critical for funding regional development initiatives and operating expenses. Nigeria has always failed to satisfy its financial commitments, resulting in a roughly 20-year backlog.

On December 13, 2024, Nigeria cleared its dues for 2023 and part of 2024, indicating a substantial change in its attitude to regional responsibilities. Dr. Touray expressed thanks for Nigeria's early payment, stating that it demonstrates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's leadership and the Nigerian government's commitment to the ECOWAS community. 

This payment is a critical step in strengthening connections among member nations and improving ECOWAS' ability to handle regional concerns effectively.

The complete payment of Nigeria's ECOWAS tax will likely have various beneficial consequences. Nigeria sets a precedence for other member nations by meeting its financial responsibilities, which may encourage others to do the same.

The community levy finances various development activities in West Africa, including infrastructure projects, health services, and educational initiatives. Nigeria's pledge may help to build trust inside the ECOWAS framework, establishing a collaborative climate in which member nations may operate more efficiently.

This payment underlines Nigeria's leadership role in ECOWAS, establishing it as an important actor in regional politics and economic growth.

During the meeting, President Tinubu urged ECOWAS member states to work together more closely to raise living conditions and establish an environment conducive to people's success. He emphasized the need for cooperation in solving shared issues and encouraged member nations to draw from good governance models in the region.

Dr. Touray said that, although many member nations have been sluggish in sending their taxes, Nigeria's timely payment reflects a commitment to joint success within ECOWAS. He recognized departing Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo's efforts for regional stability and leadership.

Nigeria's recent payment of ₦85 billion and $54 million as an ECOWAS fee is a significant milestone in West African cooperation. Nigeria not only boosts its position within ECOWAS by satisfying all of its duties for the first time in over two decades but also sets a good example for other member nations. 

This initiative is likely to boost regional integration efforts and provide much-needed cash for crucial projects throughout West Africa, helping millions of individuals in the process.

A wedding couple and 16 people barely missed death in a severe accident on Lagos' Third Mainland Bridge on December 7, 2024. The couple was driving back from their wedding ceremony at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry when their commercial bus collided with a little vehicle. 

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said that the collision was caused by a brake failure in the commercial bus, which was going at an excessive speed.

The incident included a little vehicle with the registration number AGL 22 YE and a commercial LT bus with the number BFG 204 XF. The bus, unable to stop in time, collided with the small truck, which had slowed owing to mechanical troubles. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with debris strewn over the bridge and people yelling for assistance.

LASTMA and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded swiftly to the situation. They worked together to free others trapped in the wreckage. A total of 18 people were rescued, including the married couple. 

Among them, 16 people in the bus's back suffered serious injuries, including fractures and lacerations. The wounded were quickly taken to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for immediate medical attention. 

Two other passengers sitting at the front of the bus sustained serious injuries and were sent to Gbagada General Hospital for specialist care.

The victims' conditions varied, with several suffering serious trauma as a result of the incident. Medical personnel indicated that some people needed surgery due to fractured bones and other significant injuries. 

Despite their injuries, the married pair expressed thankfulness for their survival but were understandably disturbed by the harrowing incident.

Adebayo Taofiq, a LASTMA representative, stated that braking failure was a contributing role in the tragedy. He recommended drivers follow speed restrictions and keep their cars well-maintained, with a special emphasis on braking systems, to avoid such occurrences in the future.

LASTMA's General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victims of this unfortunate occurrence. He highlighted that public awareness programs will be ramped up throughout the holiday season to encourage safe driving habits among motorists.

The tragedy has generated conversations in the community regarding road safety and car upkeep. Many locals voiced worry about frequent accidents on important routes such as the Third Mainland Bridge, advocating for greater enforcement of traffic laws and improved upkeep of public vehicles.

The administration of Professor Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze, SAN, FCArb, the Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University (IMSU), has recorded another great achievement, being the First University in the Southeast region of Nigeria. Second University in Nigeria, to host a combined team of Council For The Regulation of Engineering (COREN) and The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), for the maiden Pupil Engineers Oath Administration and Graduate Induction Ceremony.

The great feat was announced by the President of COREN on Thursday, November 28, 2024, during the Oath administration and Induction ceremony of 245 Graduates from four Departments that made up the Faculty of Engineering, Imo State University, which was held at the university's auditorium in Owerri, the Imo State Capital.

While making his remarks, the COREN President, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, FNSE, FAENG, ably represented by Engr. Ejike Mgbemena stated that the occasion is new and very important.

He said, "The program we have as a transformation agenda is that, once you are a pupil Engineer like this, you start what we call a mentorship program for one year. And what we are trying to do is to make sure that we document all Engineering body, so that you do your one-year internship program, after that, you proceed to your NYSC".

" Today marks a significant milestone in your academic journey. You have worked tirelessly to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of Engineering. Your dedication, perseverance, and passion have found you a place among the ranks of professionals who will share the future of our great country, Nigeria".

"As you begin your professional journey today, I urge you to remember that Engineering is a calling that requires integrity, ethics, and commitment to excellence. You must always strive to uphold the highest standard of professionalism, safety, and responsibility. You are expected to uphold the ethics and code of conduct of COREN, which is enshrined in the COREN Code".

He assured the graduates that COREN is committed to supporting their growth and development. As professionals, COREN will continue to provide opportunities for continuous learning, development, and networking. 

The President however advised them, saying, "If you have to succeed in this profession, you are advised to always stay curious and committed to lifelong learning. Be innovative, creative, and open to new ideas. Collaborate with others, share ideas, and build strong relationships. Above all, stay close to God".

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze, SAN, FCArb, stated that, with the oath administration and induction ceremony, the university is making another history, as this is the first of its kind in the history of Engineering. 

He expressed joy that Imo State University is the first University in the South-East, to have its Graduating Students in Engineering inducted by NSE as Pupil Engineers and COREN administered professional oath on.

The Vice-Chancellor however, thanked the organizers of the ceremony for the beautiful ideas and also thanked parents/guardians of the Graduands for their efforts and sacrifices towards ensuring a better future for the Graduands, then congratulated the Graduands.

The NSE President, Engr. (Mrs) Margaret Oguntala, FNSE, ably represented by the NSE Chairman, Owerri Branch, advised the graduates to key into the existing opportunities in Engineering, and where there is no opportunity, they should create one. 

He also said, "As engineers, you are expected to analyze existing opportunities and existing Engineering concepts. Also ensure that you develop your analytical mind". He, however, advised them to continue to upgrade from what they have been given while in school.

In her lecture entitled, "Engineering Education, Mentorship, Career Development, and Ethical Practice", the guest lecturer, Engr. Comfort Akwonya Adadu, Ph.D, who is the Director-General, of Benue State Public Procurement Commission, said that Engineering education, mentorship, career development, and ethical practices are interconnected pillars, essential for building a robust and innovative engineering workforce in Nigeria.

She also said that "by providing clear pathways for growth from Students to corporate membership in the NSE, and by addressing the challenges and leveraging opportunities, stakeholders can foster an environment that supports professional excellence and national development. By committing to high a standard of ethical conduct, seeking continuous growth, and reflecting on the consequences of engineering work, engineers ensure that their careers are not only successful but also meaningful.

In his welcome address, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Imo State University, Professor A. U. Iwuoha, FNIMechE, FCP, hinted that over the years, COREN has been conversing, educating, and planning Students Indexing in Engineering Programmes accredited by COREN.

He said that one of the benefits of that practice is to manage the in-take population at the point of admission into the Programme. He added that the thought was expanded to include Graduating Students' oath administration for them to become Pupil Engineers and commence their careers under mentorship.

Speaking further, Professor Iwuoha said, "As an Engineering Education Institution within COREN, we recognize and continue to align with the requirements of COREN in the area of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) which is the central basis of COREN accreditation of Engineering Programmes". 

The other is "Project-Based Learning (PBL), which means and involves learning through problem-solving encapsulated as Projects". He added that this aligns with the philosophy at the Faculty of Engineering of Imo State University, which is to continuously: "Think Something, Do Something, and Achieve Something".

Four Students (one each) from four departments in the IMSU Engineering Faculty were appointed as representatives and we were decorated by the President and Registrar of COREN, and Awards were given to Engrs. Professor Julius O. Onyeka. Professor Bertram M. Ozumba, Dr. V. C. Igiri, and Dr. Chima Ibeneche from their contributions in various areas.

The high point of the ceremony was the COREN Oath Administration of Engineering Graduate Pupil Engineers as well as the Graduate Membership Induction Oath by NSE.

Present at the ceremony included, Principal Officers of Imo State University, COREN and NSE Officers, Deans, Directors, HoDs, Heads of Units, Staff and Students of Imo State University, Parents/Guardians of Inductees, as well as dignitaries from all walks of life.

Imo State University (IMSU) Senate has elected Professor Agnes Osita-Njoku and Professor Martin Onuh respectively as New Deputy Vice-Chancellors.

The election was held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the University's Senate chamber, during the university's 94th regular Senate meeting.

The election was necessitated on the fact that the two-year statutory tenure of the current serving Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. P. A. Ogbonna, from Owerri Zone, and Rev. Prof. C. M. U. Ajero, from Okigwe Zone, will come to an end on December 15, 2024.

While the 94th Regular Senate Meeting was going on, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze, SAN, FCArb, who doubles as Chairman of the Senate, read relevant sections of Imo State University's Law, which empowers the Vice-Chancellor to nominate two candidates for election as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Thenafter, since he is from Orlu Zone, he nominated two candidates each from Owerri Zone and Okigwe Zone, in the persons of: Professor Agnes Osita-Njoku and Professor Chinyere Ukaga (both from Owerri Zone), Professor Onuh Martin Onuh and Professor Obianuju Oku (both from Okigwe Zone for election as Deputy Vice-Chancellors.

At the end of the keenly contested election, Professor Agnes Osita-Njoku emerged as the winner from Owerri Zone for the office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor Onuh Martin Onuh emerged as the winner from Okigwe Zone for the office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, respectively.

In their acceptance speech, Prof. Osita-Njoku (DVC Elect), who spoke on behalf of her colleague, Prof. Onuh (DVC Elect), thanked the chairman and members of the university Senate, for finding them worthy, and promised not to betray the trust and confidence reposed on them and to serve the university selflessly.

Professor Chukwumaeze stated this on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the IMSU Auditorium, during the Swearing-in/oath-taking ceremony of the Imo State University 2020 Clinical set of Medical Doctors.

He said, "The professional oath you took is a Covenant between God and man; we expect you to be the best." He advised them to read constantly to update their knowledge and to become one of the greatest Medical Doctors in the world.

While delivering his speech, The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Fatima Kyari, ably represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, stated that the life of a doctor is essentially sacrificial.

He told the new doctors that the journey they have embarked on is a journey of sacrifice to humanity. He added, "Henceforth, you would be judged as  doctors and you are expected to live a certain quality of life. Your calling is the type that is reserved for the noble in the society".

In his address, the Provost, of Imo State University College of Medicine, Professor Jude N. Egwurugwu, told the new medical doctors that the Swearing-in/Oath- taking marked a momentous ceremony in their lives.

He said, "Your induction into the Medical Profession is not just a milestone; it's a testament to your unwavering dedication, perseverance, and passion for healing. You have earned the right to join the ranks of healthcare providers who have dedicated their lives to the well-being of humanity".

Speaking further, the Provost said to the new medical doctors, "As you begin this noble journey, remember; your patients will trust you with their lives; honour that trust. Your knowledge will grow; share it with others. Your compassion will heal; nurture it".

On his part, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), of Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Professor Kenechi Anderson Uwakwe, while presenting his welcome address, hinted that the intention of a medical doctor may not be to become a millionaire or billionaire, but if he/she worked hard, he/she can never lack.

The CMD, however, harped on the need for the new medical doctors to take good care of themselves while doing their jobs because they need to be alive to work. He added, "The higher you go in the Medical Profession, the broader the space becomes. And don't forget the efforts and sacrifices of your parents and teachers".

Earlier in his address, the Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, Professor Diwe K. C. welcomed all to the occasion and expressed gratitude to God Almighty for the day, and appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chukwumaeze, for his special interest in the Faculties of Medicine, the College of Medicine and Imo State University in general. He pointed out that "the new medical doctors have carried the cross in the cause of their Studies, and now, they will wear the crown".

While delivering his lecture, titled: "Becoming the Doctor I Dreamt", the guest lecturer, Dr. Kingsley Achigbu who is the Chief Medical Director of Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, stressed the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the Medical Profession.

He, however, advised the IMSU medical graduates to imbibe the right spirit wherever they find themselves. He also said, "Don't focus on looking for the money, rather, update yourself". Dr Achigbu urged the new doctors to always remember that Nigeria needs them and they should not abandon ship.

The climax of the occasion was the presentation of over thirty (30) record-breaking awards, worn by the overall best graduand, Dr. Andrew Prince Arinze.

In his valedictory speech, the overall best graduate stated that after 9 years in school, the  day's occasion brought back the memories of  the challenges they encountered and overcame as they celebrate their accomplishments.

Speaking further, he said that those challenges have shaped them into the Doctors they are proud to become. He added that they have the potential to make a meaningful impact in the medical profession and beyond.

He, however, thanked God for seeing him and his colleagues through their long academic journey. He equally appreciated their teachers for their efforts in building them up.

Present at the occasion were, the Principal Officers/Management of Imo State University, Management and staff of Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Staff and Students of Imo State University, Parents/Guardians, Relatives, Friends, and Well-wishers of the Medical Graduands, as well as dignitaries from all walks of life.

The advent of a new terror organization, Lakurawas, in Sokoto State, Nigeria, has caused concern among citizens and authorities. This gang has seized control of five LGAs: Gudu, Tangaza, Binji, Illeila, and Silame. 

Their operations include enforcing strict Islamic regulations, collecting zakat (Islamic almsgiving), and imposing levies on local people, which are similar to techniques used by other extremist groups like Boko Haram.

Lakurawas is said to have developed during a coup in the Niger Republic in July 2023, which hampered Nigeria-Niger military collaboration. This collapse enabled extremists from the Sahel area, namely Mali and Niger, to penetrate northern Nigeria. 

Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the organization used the absence of coordinated security activities along the border to gain a foothold in Sokoto State.

Since their resurgence roughly eight months ago, Lakurawas have earned prominence for their extremist speeches and strict implementation of Islamic law. They have been known to enforce zakat on richer citizens, demanding 2.5% of their possessions and threatening seizure. 

They also collect taxes in the form of agricultural output from local farmers, with married males contributing beans and married women contributing millet.

Residents first welcomed Lakurawas since they allegedly chased out local bandits who had been harassing the region. This impression rapidly changed as the gang attempted to establish their own governing system. 

They monitor communities, removing mosque leaders who do not support their beliefs and punishing those who break their rigorous codes—smokers are severely beaten, and adolescents with unique haircuts are pushed into modifying their looks.

Lakurawas' recruiting method is especially disturbing. They look for volunteers in communities to help them enforce their regulations and policy areas. 

Those who demonstrate allegiance are granted responsibility over areas of the hamlet to maintain order by the group's understanding of Islamic law. More ominously, parents are being pressured into marrying off their daughters to gang members, with stories claiming that over 10 girls have been married under duress.

The presence of Lakurawas has caused terror among the local inhabitants. Many locals believe this gang poses a greater danger than regular security services. 

The group's influence and authority seem to be beyond the local district authorities' control. According to reports, several former bandits have joined Lakurawas, cementing their authority in the area.

In reaction to the developing issue, the Sokoto State administration has voiced significant worry over Lakurawas' actions. Deputy Governor Idris Gobir said that security authorities are aggressively trying to handle this developing danger while noting that the gang is equipped with modern weapons and a well-organized structure. 

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has declared that intelligence operations are underway to monitor and counter the group's actions. Security analysts have warned that Lakurawas represents a significant shift in Nigeria's terrorism landscape, with Sahelian jihadists attempting to establish a foothold within Nigerian borders after years of being kept at bay by joint military operations with neighboring countries. 

The situation is exacerbated by persistent banditry in Sokoto State, making it more difficult for authorities to retain control.

The rise of Lakurawas presents a challenging issue to both local populations and the Nigerian government. As this gang continues to enforce its will by violence and extortion, it endangers not just the safety of people, but also the whole stability of Sokoto State. 

The government's reaction will be critical in deciding whether they can reclaim control of these regions or fall victim to the rising influence of extreme ideas. The situation remains volatile as security personnel boost their attempts to combat this new danger while negotiating existing issues with banditry and community relations. 

The following weeks will be key in determining how well Nigerian authorities can react to this concerning trend in their war against terrorism.

More than 30 victims were buried alive after the mine collapse in Adamawa/Taraba, according to a council official. In a terrible occurrence that has once again exposed the perils of illicit mining in Nigeria, over 30 miners are believed dead when a mining shaft collapsed in the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, which spans the boundaries of Adamawa and Taraba states. The accident happened in the Buffa zone, a region known for unlicensed gold mining operations, which are mostly carried out by artisanal miners.

The fall is said to have occurred about a month ago, and local accounts indicate that around 22 miners were originally trapped. However, subsequent remarks by local authorities indicate that the overall number of casualties may approach 30. Many of those engaged were from Jamtare, a town in the Gashaka Local Government Area (LGA) noted for its abundant mineral reserves and numerous mining-related catastrophes.

Adamu Jamtare, a local miner and eyewitness, verified that all trapped workers were assumed dead. "They were mining gold when the pit collapsed," he said, highlighting the precarious circumstances in which these miners work. Engineer Suleiman Toungo, Chairman of the Toungo LGA, confirmed this information, admitting that five remains had been retrieved but expressing confusion about how many more were still buried.

Illegal mining has become a major concern in Nigeria, especially in mineral-rich areas such as gold. Despite its status as a protected region, the Gashaka-Gumti National Park has experienced an inflow of miners enticed by the potential for rapid profit. Over the years, several deaths have occurred as a consequence of dangerous mining techniques and a lack of regulatory oversight.

The park is guarded by rangers; yet, illicit mining operations often occur at night. According to reports, this is not a unique incidence; similar disasters have happened before. For example, an unidentified source revealed last year that around 70 miners perished in different events due to unlicensed mining.

The Adamawa Police spokesman, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, verified the occurrence and said that there had been several instances of mining pit collapses resulting in deaths. He claimed that the police are working with park authorities to stop unlawful mining and make those involved accountable. Given this tragedy, Nigeria's Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has urged for more coordination among stakeholders to successfully combat illicit mining.

He underlined the need for increased monitoring and control inside mining communities to avoid additional fatalities. Alake said that technical checks indicated a dearth of professional skills among artisanal miners, which contributed to similar tragedies. He asked local governments to accept responsibility for monitoring unlawful activities within their boundaries and to collaborate with state agencies to create early warning systems to avert such occurrences.

The environmental consequences of unlawful mining are severe. Philip Jakpor, Executive Director of the Renewed Development Initiative (RDI), questioned the government's weak control of mining operations. He emphasized that uncontrolled activities jeopardize not just miners, but also local ecosystems in protected regions such as Gashaka-Gumti. Jakpor demanded immediate government involvement and an inquiry into the events surrounding the recent accident. He noted that foreign nationals often work alongside local miners in these unlawful activities, compounding safety hazards and undercutting regulatory efforts.

The influence on local communities has been significant. Families have been bereaved by the death of loved ones who sought greater economic possibilities in mining. Many miners come from destitute origins and consider gold mining as a means out of poverty, despite the associated risks.

Residents have voiced dissatisfaction with authorities for failing to take significant action in the face of recurring disasters. The community wants stronger support services for miners and tighter policing of unlawful activities.

The collapse of the mine pit in Adamawa/Taraba serves as a stark warning of the dangers of illicit mining in Nigeria. With almost 30 lives possibly sacrificed, it highlights the critical need for significant changes in the industry.

Stakeholders must collaborate to create effective policies that safeguard both miners and the environment, while also addressing the socioeconomic issues that drive people to engage in unsafe mining operations.

As officials examine this tragedy and retrieve those who remain trapped under the debris, it is apparent that until substantial changes are made to how mining is governed and supervised in Nigeria, similar tragedies will continue, costing lives and disrupting communities throughout the country.
