Imo State University (IMSU) Senate has elected Professor Agnes Osita-Njoku and Professor Martin Onuh respectively as New Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
The election was held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the University's Senate chamber, during the university's 94th regular Senate meeting.
The election was necessitated on the fact that the two-year statutory tenure of the current serving Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. P. A. Ogbonna, from Owerri Zone, and Rev. Prof. C. M. U. Ajero, from Okigwe Zone, will come to an end on December 15, 2024.
While the 94th Regular Senate Meeting was going on, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze, SAN, FCArb, who doubles as Chairman of the Senate, read relevant sections of Imo State University's Law, which empowers the Vice-Chancellor to nominate two candidates for election as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Thenafter, since he is from Orlu Zone, he nominated two candidates each from Owerri Zone and Okigwe Zone, in the persons of: Professor Agnes Osita-Njoku and Professor Chinyere Ukaga (both from Owerri Zone), Professor Onuh Martin Onuh and Professor Obianuju Oku (both from Okigwe Zone for election as Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
At the end of the keenly contested election, Professor Agnes Osita-Njoku emerged as the winner from Owerri Zone for the office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor Onuh Martin Onuh emerged as the winner from Okigwe Zone for the office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, respectively.
In their acceptance speech, Prof. Osita-Njoku (DVC Elect), who spoke on behalf of her colleague, Prof. Onuh (DVC Elect), thanked the chairman and members of the university Senate, for finding them worthy, and promised not to betray the trust and confidence reposed on them and to serve the university selflessly.
Prof. Osita-Njoku has held different administrative positions which contributed to the growth of Imo State University, such as Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences 2023-Date, Director, Quality Assurance 2018-2021, HOD, Department of Sociology 2015-2016, Deputy Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies 2014-2015, HOD, Political Science Department 2013-2014, HOD, Sociology Department 2011-2012, Supervisor, for Second Semester Central Examination 2011, Faculty Rep, GST Examination 2011, HOD, Department of Psychology Dec.2009-Dec.2010, Coordinator, ICEP Social Sciences Feb.2009- Dec.2009, Unit Head of Psychology 1998-2002, School of Social Sciences Exam Officer 1996-1999, College Time Table Representative 1993-1999, Chairman/Member of numerous Committees, Boards and Panels, among others.
In the same vein, Prof. Onuh has held different administrative positions that have positively contributed to the growth and development of Imo State University. These include: Dean, Faculty of Agriculture from 2021 to date. HOD, Department of Soil Science and Environment from 2015 to 2020, Desk Officer, TETFund from 2017 to 2019, Special Assistant to the Ag. VC from 2011 to 2012, HOD, Department of Crop Science and Biotechnology from 2006 to 2010. He has served as Chairman/Member on several University Committees, Boards and Panels, among others.
