The House of Representatives has made a key move to build the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages in Aba, Abia state.
This proposal, which passed its first reading on October 9, 2024, seeks to promote the study and preservation of Nigerian languages and traditions.
The measure, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight cosponsors, focuses on equitable access to higher education for all Nigerians, regardless of background.
The planned university aims to fulfill many main goals:
Nigerian Language Promotion: The institution's primary goal would be to advance education in Nigerian languages while also building national unity via linguistic variety.
Academic Programs: Its goal is to design and provide academic and professional programs that lead to certificates, degrees, and postgraduate research while stressing practical skills.
Research and Collaboration: The university will serve as a research center, working with other universities engaged in language research and development.
The law is anticipated to go through a second reading shortly, followed by a public hearing to solicit feedback from stakeholders.
If authorized, it would expand Nigeria's existing network of around 270 institutions. Critics have expressed worry about the growth of tertiary institutions in the nation, calling for a more deliberate approach to higher education.
While some stakeholders applaud the proposal to promote Nigerian languages, others question the timing and need of building another institution.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has previously raised concern over underfunding and management challenges at existing universities.
As Nigeria continues to face educational issues, the planned Bola Tinubu University offers both prospects and challenges.
Its success will be dependent on good execution and appropriate resources to achieve its lofty aims for national development via language instruction.
