IMSU VC Reaffirms His Commitment To The Fight Against Unethical Conducts In The University.
By Augustus Onyekachi Nwaozor, Anipr
The Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, Owerri, Professor Uchefula U. Chukwumaeze SAN, FCArb, has reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against all forms of unethical conduct in the university.
He stated this on Friday, July 12, 2024, when the University's anti-sexual harassment team, ably led by the Director, of the Center for Women and Gender Studies and former Commissioner for Education in Imo State, Professor Florence Emenalor, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
While speaking, Professor Chukwumaeze hinted that right from when he assumed office about two years ago as the Vice-Chancellor, he created and distributed an email known as "talktoimsuvc@gmail.com", as a communication channel, where people can report any corruption case or unethical conduct, especially those who may not be bold or free to come face to face and report their case, adding that through the email, his administration has tracked down some bad blood in the university and they have been sanctioned appropriately.
The SAN mentioned that sexual harassment is one of the unethical behaviors his administration frowns at. He defined sexual harassment as "using official position to make sexual demand, to abuse sexually or to grant favor because of sex".
He revealed that before he assumed office as Imo State University Vice-Chancellor, so many people had lost interest in the university due to the high level of corruption which resulted in a drastic reduction of candidates that applied to JAMB for admission into various programs in the university. Still, his zero tolerance for corruption has boosted public confidence in IMSU which has now resulted in a massive increase in the number of candidates seeking admission into various programs in the university, from 12 or 13,000 candidates in the year 2022 to 18,000 candidates in 2023 and this year 2024, over 26,000 candidates applied for admission into various programs in the university. The Professor of Law concluded by assuring that, his administration will move IMSU to an enviable height.
Earlier in her speech, the leader of the Anti-sexual harassment team, Professor F.C. Emenalor, who is the Director of the Center for Women and Gender Studies and one-time Commissioner for Education in Imo State said that her team is made up of UNECO Representatives of Students' Union Government, drawn from various faculties in the university.
Speaking further, Professor Emenalor said that a group known as "Alliance for Africa" hosted 12 universities at Bolton White Hotel, Abuja (IMSU inclusive), from 12th to 15th June 2024, for "A Consultative Meeting on The Drafting Process of a Comprehensive and Robust Gender and Sexual Harassment Policy for Nigerian Tertiary Institutions Towards Addressing Sexual Harassment".
She added that both The Directors, Center for Women and Gender Studies, and Students' Union Executives of the 12 invited Universities were hosted by the group. The one-time Commissioner for Education, however, informed the Vice-Chancellor that a group known as "Assessors", who were trained in the program at Abuja, were directed to go around the campuses and ask students questions about sexual harassment will carry out the assignment starting from Monday, July 15, 2024, in the university.
On his part, one of the team members who is the spokesperson for the Students' Union in the University and a final year Law student, Mr Ken-Nnamdi Justice, gave a breakdown of the assignment given to them as students concerning sexual harassment to include; (1). To Create Awareness About What Constitutes Sexual Harassment across the Universities, (2). To Promote Zero Tolerance Strategy, which requires having a center where students can report any sexual harassment, and (3). To interface with stakeholders in the university, which comprises staff and students.
Mr. Justice added that the 3 agendas listed above would be incorporated into a pamphlet that would be distributed across the university, and it would be used as a working tool to ensure that sexual harassment is abolished in the Universities. Other team members from the Students' Union are Onyewuchi Chisom Wisdom and Kudah Lilian Nmesoma.
